What does it mean to be a Christian in today's world?

Christians...today's vilins? The butts of a lot of jokes? Hypocrytical? Bigots?

Yup...it's true. We are human just like everyone else afterall. We have just as many failings as the next person on this planet.  But do we dare to be different than the norm?

I don't consider myself better than anyone else.  I know there are groups out there, very outspoken groups at that, that give Christians a bad name.  But I ask this question, who are we supposed to be?  I'd like to show the world a different kind of people than they currently know.  A people based on love rather than hatred, bigotry, falsity, and hypocracy.  To start this Christian re-birth so to speak, we have to get to the roots of who we are so we can discover how we are called to be.

Let's begin this journey with big question to everyone...and please share this with everyone and encourage discussions...and please post comments! :-)

In God's eyes...what does it mean to be HUMAN?

EDIT: Clarification on the question, I don't mean what does God want us to be, what does it mean to be Christian or Christ-like...I mean, when God created us (for those people who believe this to be the case as I for-one do)...what did God mean for it to be human and what does it mean now?

  1. So I know getting a blog started and noticed isn't going to be easy...So here we go with my thoughts on the question.

First off...let’s get some obvious answers out of the way:

    1. Flawed
    2. Broken
    3. Alone
    4. Spiritual
    5. Intellectual
    6. Free

Well...aren't these accurate? Isn't that what God's view of Humanity is?

    Well I don't think so.

Here is what I think it means to be human in God's eyes: DEPENDENT

We are utterly and completely dependent. We are not beings who seek solidarity. We want, seek, and need something, someone, or somewhere...all...the...time. Being creatures of habit, every person seeks something out for comfort. That can be as simple as another person, a thing, and even a place. We are dependent on something 100% of the time. At the more complex end of thought, we are dependent on our own sense of self, who we are and what we are. At our core we are dependent on ourselves, if we weren't...what would we be? We take comfort and strength from this.

The World teaches us to be dependent on nobody but ourselves with one hand, and then with the other tells us to be dependent on the World for our image in society. These two conflicting thoughts often battle inside us and make us weaker. Insecurity stems from this (this is my opinion and NOT based on studies or anything like that). Every kid has this internal struggle and it comes out different ways. Bullying, partying, smoking, drinking, sports, popularity, clubs...the list can go on. All of it starts with that internal struggle of dependency. Every generation had its own set of dependencies created by the World; these are just some of the ones we face.

A deep rooted and integral part of being Christian is dependency on God and who we are as children of God. It becomes part of our self-awareness and replaces our dependencies created by the World as it stands today.

    Preview for next week:
How do we replace our Worldly dependencies?
